A treasure of art and tranquillity in the heart of Saint-Germain-des-Prés

Behind this beautiful classical 17th century façade,
the Hôtel des Saints Pères is a treasure trove of art and tranquillity.
A green patio and a unique Fresco
The beautiful classical façade of the Hôtel was built in 1658 by Daniel Gittard, architect to Louis XIV. This apartment building and private mansion presents architectural particularities for its time: rare oval friezes on both sides of the pediment of the garden façade, sobriety and strength of the window frames, great clarity and legibility of the whole... Gittard would have tried to invent a French style in opposition to the Italian baroque style in vogue in the 17th century.
In 1666, Pierre Abraham, Lord of Charange - councillor, maître d'hôtel ordinaire of King Louis XIV and tenant of the first floor of the mansion, commissioned a fresco to decorate his ceiling. The result is a fresco of more than 40m2 representing an allegory of Virtue crowning the Good Augur and under the gaze of Intelligence. Framed by voussoirs decorated with floral motifs, this unique fresco is attributed to the School of Versailles.
In the early 1980s, Esprit de France bought the Hôtel des Saints Pères in the 6th arrondissement of Paris and carried out renovation work. The fresco was then rediscovered, in perfect condition, in a false ceiling under which it had been hidden during the 20th century. What a wonderful discovery!

Saint-Germain-des-Prés

A place of art and history
Despite the hustle and bustle of the street, there is a confidential atmosphere here. The patio provides a source of natural light to the majority of the hotel's rooms. This certainly explains why the hotel has always welcomed great figures of artistic life, including the painter Francis Bacon, who was regularly visited by Jean Dubuffet, numerous writers such as Hervé Bazin, who visited his publisher Grasset, famous pianists before their Parisian concerts such as Alfred Brendel, the designer Tom Ford or Juliette Greco, a figure of Saint-Germain-des-Prés.
Art in your room
Each of the rooms in the Hôtel des Saints Pères has its own identity, signed by paintings, drawings or engravings from the 17th and 18th centuries.
Among the fifty or so remarkable pieces, we note the presence of the painting "Scène de Basse-Cour" by the Dutch School (17th century), a remarkable portrait by Natoire (18th century), but also more contemporary works such as the sculpture "Adam and Eve" by Georges Jeanclos or the bronze "Hibou" by Roseline Granet.
